Movement types

• Quartz — battery powered, accurate to seconds a month, low maintenance. The practical choice for most people.
• Automatic — mechanical, wound by wrist movement, no battery. Loses or gains time daily and stops after a day or two off the wrist. Bought for the mechanism rather than the accuracy.
• Smart — requires charging every few days and pairing with a phone. Check compatibility with your operating system before ordering.

Water resistance is widely misread

The ratings are laboratory static-pressure figures, not swimming depths.

• 3 ATM / 30 m — splashes and rain only. Not for swimming.
• 5 ATM / 50 m — brief swimming, no diving or jumping in
• 10 ATM / 100 m — swimming and snorkelling
• 20 ATM / 200 m — suitable for diving

Never operate the crown or pushers underwater, and treat any watch with a leather strap as splash-resistant at best.

Straps and sizing

Check the lug width in millimetres if you plan to change straps. Case diameter of 38–40 mm suits most wrists; 44 mm and above is substantial and looks oversized on a slim wrist.
