Age guidance matters more than it looks

Age labels on toys are safety guidance, not difficulty ratings. A toy marked 3+ is usually marked that way because it contains small parts that present a choking hazard — not because a younger child would find it too hard. If there is a younger sibling in the house, buy for the youngest child who will have access to it.

What to check before buying

• Small parts — anything that fits through a toilet-roll tube is a choking hazard for under-threes
• Batteries — button cells are extremely dangerous if swallowed; check the compartment is screw-secured on anything a small child will handle
• Cords and strings — anything over about 20 cm presents a strangulation risk for infants
• Magnets — small strong magnets cause serious internal injury if more than one is swallowed; avoid entirely for young children

Buying gifts ahead of time
