Measure the space, not the box

Storage fails when it is bought by appearance rather than dimension. Measure the interior of the cupboard, drawer or shelf — including any lip or runner that reduces the usable width — before choosing container sizes.

Uniform container sizes stack and reshuffle far better than assorted ones, even if assorted looks more efficient on paper.

Choosing materials

Clear plastic lets you see contents, which matters for anything you access often. Fabric bins collapse flat when empty and are lighter on high shelves, but sag under weight and do not suit damp spaces. Vacuum bags work well for bedding and seasonal clothing, but not for anything with structure — down and foam do not always recover their loft.

Weight and mounting

For over-door and hanging organisers, check the stated weight limit and the door thickness they fit. For wall-mounted storage, the fixing determines the load, not the shelf — plasterboard needs specific anchors and cannot take the loads a masonry wall will.
