Drainage is the thing that matters most. A pot without drainage holes will eventually kill most plants through root rot, however carefully you water. If a decorative pot has no holes, use it as a cachepot with a plastic nursery pot inside, and empty any standing water after watering.

Check the stated dimensions carefully — planter sizes are often given as external measurements, and the usable internal volume is smaller. For repotting, choose a pot 2–5 cm wider in diameter than the current one rather than jumping to something much larger.

Outdoor planters should be checked for frost resistance if you have freezing winters; unglazed terracotta in particular cracks when wet soil freezes.
