Sizing and fit

Collars, harnesses and clothing should be fitted by measurement, not by your dog's weight or breed. Measure the neck and the chest at its widest point, and allow two fingers of slack under any fitted collar or harness.

A harness that is too loose is a genuine escape risk for a dog that backs up when startled. Too tight causes chafing under the front legs, which is easy to miss under fur.

Toys and chew items

Size the toy to your pet, and supervise anything new. Toys small enough to fit fully in the mouth are a choking risk, and squeakers and plastic eyes become hazards once a determined chewer gets through the outer layer. Check chew toys regularly and discard them once torn.

Grooming tools

Slicker brushes suit long or double coats; rubber curry brushes suit short coats. For nail clippers, guillotine styles are harder to control than scissor styles. If you have never trimmed nails before, ask a groomer or vet to show you where the quick is — cutting into it is painful and bleeds.
