Buy for conditions, not for the catalogue photo

Match your kit to realistic conditions — the coldest night, the heaviest rain, the longest distance you will actually face, not the average.

• Tents — the hydrostatic head rating (mm) indicates waterproofing. 1,500 mm handles light rain; 3,000 mm and above is needed for sustained downpour or exposed pitches. 'Two-person' generally means two people and no gear.
• Sleeping bags — the comfort rating is the useful number. The extreme rating is a survival figure, not a comfortable night.
• Head torches — lumens indicate brightness, but beam distance and battery life at full output matter more in practice.
• Cycling helmets — must carry recognised safety certification and must be replaced after any impact, even if undamaged.

A note on safety-critical equipment

For anything where failure carries real risk — climbing hardware, helmets, buoyancy aids, load-bearing equipment — buy from specialist retailers who can verify certification. This range suits general recreational use rather than technical or expedition conditions.
