Extending Wi-Fi coverage

The main choice is between a repeater and a mesh system.

Repeaters and extenders rebroadcast an existing signal. They are cheap and simple, but halve throughput on the extended band and create a second network name you have to switch between. They work best when placed halfway between the router and the dead zone — placing one in the dead zone itself achieves nothing, since it can only rebroadcast what it receives.

Mesh systems use several units on one network name and hand devices over automatically. More expensive, considerably better in a larger home.

Specifications worth checking

  • Wi-Fi standard — Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) is adequate; Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) handles more simultaneous devices
  • Dual band — 2.4 GHz travels further through walls, 5 GHz is faster over short distances
  • Ethernet ports — useful for a TV or console; a wired connection always beats wireless

Check the plug type and mains voltage match your region before ordering.
