Understanding the numbers

Lighting specifications confuse more people than any other category, largely because wattage no longer means what it used to.

  • Lumens measure brightness. Roughly: 400 lm suits a bedside lamp, 800 lm a standard room bulb, 1,500 lm and above a kitchen or workspace.
  • Watts measure power consumed, not brightness. An LED at 9W gives roughly the light of an old 60W incandescent.
  • Kelvin measures colour temperature. 2,700K is warm and yellow, suited to living rooms and bedrooms; 4,000K is neutral; 6,000K and above is cold and blue-white, better for garages and task lighting than anywhere you relax.

Outdoor and solar lighting

Check the IP rating on anything used outside. IP44 handles splashes; IP65 and above withstands sustained rain and is what you want for exposed positions.

Solar lights depend entirely on where you put them. A panel in partial shade will not charge fully, and stated runtimes assume a full day of direct sun. In winter, expect substantially less than the advertised hours.

Voltage and fittings

Check the bulb fitting (E27, E14, GU10, B22) against your existing fixtures before ordering, and confirm mains voltage matches your region.
