Understanding materials and finishes

Terminology in online jewellery is often loose, so it is worth knowing what the common descriptions mean.

  • Sterling silver (925) — solid silver alloy, tarnishes over time but polishes back
  • Gold plated — a thin gold layer over base metal; wear life depends on plating thickness
  • Gold filled — a thicker bonded gold layer, considerably more durable than plating
  • Stainless steel — does not tarnish, holds up to daily wear and water, usually the most practical everyday choice
  • Alloy or 'fashion metal' — mixed base metals, best for occasional wear

If you have sensitive skin

Reactions are usually to nickel, common in base-metal alloys and in the posts of inexpensive earrings. Surgical stainless steel, titanium and solid sterling silver are the safer choices. If a previous piece has caused irritation, avoid unspecified 'alloy' descriptions for anything worn against skin.

Making plated pieces last

Put jewellery on last, after perfume and moisturiser, and take it off before showering, swimming or exercise. Chlorine and salt water are particularly hard on plating. Store pieces separately, since harder stones scratch softer settings.

Delivery and returns

Jewellery ships worldwide with estimated delivery of 10–25 business days and 30-day returns, though for hygiene reasons pierced earrings cannot be returned once opened.
