Scale is what most people get wrong

Decor bought online almost always arrives smaller than imagined, because product photos are shot to fill the frame regardless of actual size.

Before ordering, check the stated dimensions and mark them out — a sheet of newspaper on the wall, or masking tape on a shelf. It takes two minutes and prevents the most common disappointment.

For wall art, a piece should generally span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. For a gallery arrangement, keep 5–8 cm between frames.

Colour on screen

Screen calibration varies, so treat colour as approximate. Neutrals, blacks and strong primaries reproduce reliably; muted and pastel tones are least reliable. If a piece has to match existing decor exactly, it is worth accepting some risk or choosing a contrasting rather than matching tone.

Hanging

Fixings are rarely included, because the correct fixing depends on your wall. Plasterboard needs specific anchors rated for the weight; masonry needs a plug and screw. Check the weight of the item before choosing.
