Heat styling without damaging your hair

Heat is the main cause of avoidable hair damage, and most people use more than they need.

• Fine or chemically treated hair — 150–180°C
• Normal hair — 180–200°C
• Coarse or very thick hair — 200–210°C

Above 210°C you are into the range where protein damage happens quickly and is not reversible. Always use a heat protectant, and work on fully dry hair — styling damp hair with straighteners effectively boils the water inside the hair shaft.

Choosing a tool

Ceramic plates heat evenly and are the safest general choice. Tourmaline and titanium heat faster and hotter, which suits thick hair but is easy to overdo on fine hair. Adjustable temperature matters more than maximum temperature. For curling tools, smaller barrels give tighter curls that drop over the day; larger barrels give looser waves that hold better.

Check the voltage before you buy

Many styling tools are single-voltage. If you are ordering from outside the region the tool was made for, confirm it supports your mains supply. A plug adapter changes the pin shape; it does not convert voltage, and connecting a 110V tool to a 220–240V supply will destroy it and can be dangerous.
