Measure before you order, twice

Furniture is the category where returns are most inconvenient, so measurement is worth the extra minutes.

Check the product dimensions against the space, and then check the route the packed item takes to get there — doorways, stair turns, and lift dimensions if applicable. Flat-packed items are easier here than assembled ones, which is worth weighing against assembly time.

Allow clearance around anything with a door or drawer: a cabinet that fits the wall exactly may not open properly in a corner.

Materials

Solid wood is heaviest, most durable and most expensive. Engineered wood and MDF hold a finish well and are stable, but do not tolerate moisture and cannot be repaired once swollen. Metal frames carry more weight for their size and suit shelving and desks.

For anything holding weight — shelving, desks, storage — check the stated load rating per shelf rather than the total.

Assembly and fixing

Tall or top-heavy items should be anchored to a wall, particularly in a home with children. Wall fixings are usually not included, since the right fixing depends on your wall type.
