Keyboards, mice and stands

Switch type determines how a keyboard feels and sounds. Membrane keyboards are quiet and cheap; mechanical keyboards last longer and are far louder, which matters in a shared room. Within mechanical, linear switches are smooth, tactile switches have a bump, and clicky switches are the loudest by a wide margin.

Wireless connection — 2.4 GHz dongles have lower latency than Bluetooth and work before the operating system loads, which matters if you need BIOS access. Bluetooth saves a USB port and pairs with tablets and phones.

Layout — check whether a keyboard is ANSI (US) or ISO (UK/EU) layout. The Enter key shape and the position of the @ and " characters differ, and it is a persistent irritation if you get the wrong one.

Stands and ergonomics

A laptop stand raises the screen but also raises the keyboard, so it needs a separate keyboard and mouse to be worth using. Aim for the top of the screen at roughly eye level.
