Getting charging speed right

Charging is only as fast as the slowest part of the chain — charger, cable and device must all support the same standard.

• USB Power Delivery (PD) is the common fast-charging standard over USB-C, and what most modern phones, tablets and laptops use
• Wattage — 20W suits most phones, 30–45W tablets and small laptops, 65W and above larger laptops
• Cable rating matters. A cable rated for 60W will not carry 100W, and many cheap USB-C cables carry data only or charge slowly regardless of the charger

For fast charging, use a cable explicitly rated for the wattage you need and check it supports the data standard if you also transfer files.

Wireless charging

Qi wireless charging is slower than cable and generates more heat. Thick or metal phone cases interfere with it, as do magnetic mounts and card holders.

Safety

Use chargers with recognised safety marks, and do not leave devices charging on beds, sofas or anything that traps heat. Avoid running cables under carpet or bedding.
