Wireless earbuds and headphones

The specifications that actually affect your experience are not the ones usually advertised.

• Bluetooth version — 5.0 and above gives more reliable connection and better battery life. Below 5.0 is worth avoiding.
• Codec support — SBC is universal but basic. AAC matters for iPhone users, aptX for many Android devices.
• Battery life — check whether the stated figure is the earbuds alone or includes charge-case cycles. These are often quoted together, which is misleading.
• Noise cancellation — active noise cancellation (ANC) uses microphones to counter low-frequency sound. 'Noise isolation' just means the tips block your ear canal, which is not the same thing.

Fit matters more than specification

With in-ear designs, the seal determines the bass response and the isolation. If earbuds sound thin, the tips are usually the wrong size rather than the drivers being poor. Try the alternative tips supplied before concluding anything about sound quality.

Microphones

For recording or streaming, a USB condenser microphone is simpler than an XLR setup and needs no interface. Check whether a stand or shock mount is included — many are sold without.
